FAQs
Where does practice meet?
All of our beginner classes meet at our clubhouse, which is located at 403 SE Caruthers Street. This is also where pickup happens after class. Our boatyard, which is where all our boats and our dock are located, is a few blocks away at 306 SE Ivon Street.
What if I have to cancel my session/class? Do you offer refunds?
We can offer refunds for cancellations, or offer the option to switch to another session, all the way up until the session/class starts. Once the session has started, we cannot offer refunds or switch options for any cancellations.
What do I do after summer beginner classes if my athlete wants to keep rowing?
We offer rowing throughout the entire year; summer, fall, winter, and spring! If your athlete wants to keep rowing into the school year, there are several options for them. We have our middle school team, which is available to 7th and 8th graders and meets two days a week. We also have our competitive team, which is available to 8th - 12th graders, for athletes interested in going to races and rowing a little more frequently (practice offered six days a week).
Does my athlete have to attend every practice during the summer? Do you offer make up days or pro-rating?
For summer sessions, we encourage athletes to attend as many practices as they can so they can get the most out of the class, but it’s fine if they have to miss some days. We do not offer make up days if you voluntarily miss a practice. If we have to cancel a class, due to weather or other circumstances, we will notify you in advance and offer a make up day.
At this point, we are not offering pro-rating fees if your athlete can’t attend every practice. We appreciate your understanding of our policies to ensure the smooth operating of our sessions.
Does my athlete have to attend every practice during the school year?
We encourage athletes to attend as many practices as they can, but attendance is not required for all days. That being said, the more practices an athlete attends, they more likely they are to improve and get faster. For our competitive team that offers practice six days a week during the school year, our minimum attendance recommendation is three days a week.
Why do I have to get a USRowing membership to row at Rose City?
USRowing is the national organization for our sport. All our athletes – experienced and beginner – are required to be registered with USRowing, as it provides critical insurance for our athletes and coaches, and allows our team to function safely. All rowing teams in the nation who wish to compete in USRowing sanctioned events and regattas (races), fulfill these same requirements.
There are different membership options available depending on the athlete’s circumstances. The Learn to Row membership is a great option for our summer beginner classes, as it will cover you for 60 days. The Basic membership covers you for a full year and is the standard for most of our team, but any athletes wishing to compete at Regionals and/or Nationals in the spring will need to get a Championship membership.
My athlete isn’t sure about racing or competing. Can they still join the team?
Yes! There are no tryouts or cuts at Rose City. Although we are a competitive team, athletes are not required to participate in all races. That being said, racing and competing is part of our sport, and most athletes eventually express a desire to race once they’ve been rowing for some time.
Will you still hold practice if the weather is bad?
Generally, we will row in most weather conditions, rain or shine. But there are some instances when it is unsafe to go out on the river. Thunderstorms and high winds are usually what prevents us from going out. If weather unexpectedly changes, we will opt for an indoor practice on the ergs.
